To Study – לערנען זיך / To Educate – לערנען[edit]

איך לערן זיך אידיש I’m studying Yiddish

דו לערנסט זיך אידיש You might be studying Yiddish

ער/זי לערנט זיך אידיש He/she is studying Yiddish.

The verbal additive זיך is required when one is “studying”. Prior to now tense (I’ve learnt, you’ve gotten learnt and so on…) the verbal additive
comes instantly after the verb:

זי האָט זיך געלערנט the verb being hoben.

To show is just לערנען.

דער רב לערנט מיט מיר תּורה Der Rov lernt mit mir Toyre – The Rov is instructing me Toyre.

One other method to say that somebody is instructing you is:

דער רב לערנט מיך תּורה Der Rov gelernt mikh Toyre – Der Rov is instructing me Toyre.

So both ער לערנט מיט מיר …ער לערנט מיך…
Er lernt mikh… or er lernt mit mir…

Verbs with prefixes like for instance:אַרױסגײן, נאָכגײן, אױפֿמאַכן oyf(of)makhn-to open, nokhgayn-to observe and aroys (arusgayn) to exit. When conjugating these verbs one put the final a part of the phrase first for instance makhn oyf, gayn nokh, aroys gayn and so forth. Lemoshl:

Ikh homosexual aroys, di gayst aroys, er gayt aroys…

ikh homosexual nokh, di gayst nokh, er gayt nokh…

Additionally an adverb could be place in between the verb and prefix:

Ikh homosexual shnel aroys, di gayst shnel aroys, un afile er gayt zayer shnel aroys in dos glaykhn…

Conjugating verbs[edit]

Current tense[edit]

Most verbs are conjugated in the identical type in current tense, although there are some exceptions. The topic often comes earlier than the verb (like in English), however generally the order is reversed (like Hebrew) to vary the tone (most notably, in questions). Right here is an instance of an everyday verb:

  • הערן – hear
  • איך הער – I hear
  • דו הערסט – you hear
  • ער הערט – he hears
  • זי הערט – she hears
  • עס הערט – it hears
  • מיר הערן – we hear
  • איר הערט – you (plural or formal) hear
  • זיי הערן – they hear

Verbs that come from Hebrew are often conjugated along with the phrase זײַן to be, much like in Yeshivish (they’re Modeh; he’s Meyasheiv the Stirah; they’re Mechaleik between them). Right here is an instance:

  • מסכּים זײַן – agree
  • איך בּין מסכּים – I agree
  • דו בּיסט מסכּים – you agree
  • ער/זי/עס איז מסכּים – he/she/it agrees
  • מיר/זיי זײַנען מסכּים – we/they agree
  • איר זענט מסכּים – you agree

איך בין מסכּים געװען Ikh bin maskim geveyn

Previous tense[edit]

Previous tense is conjugated by including the serving to verb האָבּן have, and (often) including the letters גע to the verb. That is much like some previous tense phrases in English (“I’ve performed that.”) For phrases which come from Hebrew, זײַן turns into געווען. Listed below are some examples:

  • האָבּן געהערט – heard
  • איך האָבּ געהערט – I heard
  • דו האָסט געהערט – you heard
  • ער/זי/עס האָט געהערט – he/she/it heard
  • מיר/זיי האָבּן געהערט – we/they heard
  • איר האָט געהערט – you heard
  • האָבּן מסכּים געווען – agreed
  • איך האָבּ מסכּים געווען – I agreed
  • דו האָסט מסכּים געווען – you agreed
  • ער/זי/עס האָט מסכּים געווען – he/she/it agreed
  • מיר/זיי האָבּן מסכּים געווען – we/they agreed

The Holocaust and the widespread linguistic assimilation of Jews all through the world have collectively diminished the inhabitants of Yiddish-speakers from an estimated 13 million earlier than the Second World Warfare to maybe 1 million at the moment. About half of the remaining Yiddish-speakers at the moment are aged European Jews, usually Holocaust-survivors, whereas the opposite half are chareidim, largely Hasidim, largely younger. Unsurprisingly, most Hasidim converse a southern dialect of Yiddish which was the bulk dialect pre-World Warfare II, and is considerably distant from the Lithuanian dialect that varieties the premise for the usual YIVO pronunciation. Though the Hasidim reject a number of the reforms made by the YIVO in orthography, morphology, and lexicon, their Yiddish is recognizably the identical language.

Although no dictionaries or grammars of Hasidic Yiddish have but been printed, a “Hasidic Commonplace” has nonetheless developed among the many youthful generations born in America, and an analogous course of has occurred in Hasidic communities in different components of the world. Standardization has been assisted by such components as geography – Hasidic teams that when lived in separate international locations now inhabit the identical neighborhoods in Brooklyn – by the colleges, and by the Yiddish press. Hasidic Commonplace has way more room for variation in spelling and pronunciation than YIVO Commonplace, and it’s harder for starting college students to study. Nonetheless, the Yiddish language has radically shifted its middle of gravity and it’s excessive time to allow college students to study the Yiddish that’s most generally spoken at the moment. To that finish, the Hasidic Grammar Undertaking has been created to provide a web based textbook and grammar.
